Nigeria celebrities who could run for presidency in 2019

President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari is a retired General in the Nigerian Army and the current President of Nigeria. He was sworn in May, 2015 after winning with over 10, 000, 000 (Ten million votes).
The next Nigerian general elections are due to hold in 2019 and though Buhari will be eligible for a second term, other candidates could run against him.

Nigerian celebrities in the Entertainment industry are very influential. The singers, comedians get sold out shows and the actors make cinemas full and get their movies premiered nationally and internationally.

The influence of Nigerian entertainers is one that cannot be toyed with and that drown the popularity of an average Nigerian politician. Gistpeeps lists four celebrities that are capable of challenging President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari’s position in the 2019 elections.



1. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is one of the top Nollywood actress who has appeared in over 300 films. She is a beloved A-list actress with many supporters (1.1 million on Instagram and 3.2 on Facebook) and was the first African celebrity to get over 1 million likes on her Facebook page.

In 2013, Time Magazine named her one of the top 100 most influential people in the world and in 2014, the Nigerian government honoured her as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR for her contribution to the Nigerian cinema.

Omotola is a dedicated philanthropist who founded her own Non Government Organisation (NGO) called the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme (OYEP) which helps a significant number of youths. In 2005, she became a United Nations WFP (World Food Programme) Ambassador and also participated in the Walk the World campaign in Liberia with President Ellen Sir Leaf-Johnson.

She is seen as a family oriented woman with her hands in both the Film and the Entertainment industries in Nigeria and she would have a lot of support from her fans and followers.

2. Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere aka Alibaba

Ali Baba, real name Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere aka Alibaba is a decorated veteran Nigerian comedian and entertainer known for his comedy as well as opinions on societal, economic and religious issues.

He is a well-educated man who read Religious Studies & Philosophy at the  Ambrose Alli University. He is the 2006 and 2009 receiver of the Invaluable contribution to the Entertainment Industry award by City People Entertainment and in 2005, was featured on CNN African voices where he spoke about his aim to improve the perception of Nigerian Comedy.

This year alone, made headlines with his opinions on things holding Nigeria back and for calling out Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayoshe on a statement he made about the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.

He is not one to hold back his tongue in times of injustice and is always looking for new ways to encourage Nigerians to do better in all scenarios and he would be a great leader who could really push our country forward.

3. Innocent Ujah Idibia aka 2baba.

Innocent Ujah Idibia aka 2Baba, is a top Nigerian artist who is highly celebrated all round Africa.
Though he is a University dropout, 2baba is still a very intellectual singer with massive influence in Nigeria. His hit song African Queen was the first Nigerian song to be featured on MTV Base and was featured the American movie, Phat Girls.

He is the recipient of many awards for his significant contribution to the Music industry; such awards include an  MTV Europe Music Award and a World Music Award.

He is a philanthropist who has a an NGO called 2Face Idibia Reach-Out Foundation. With a large following of 1.6 million on Instagram and 1.4 million on Twitter, his influence has seen him get chieftaincy awards in the North and other accolades. He is well-loved for his humility and is one Nigerian artist that is well-known across the nook and crannies of the nation.

4. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a very popular Nigerian writer. She is a well-educated woman with two prestigious masters degrees from John Hopkins University and Yale University respectively. She is a recipient of many awards such as the 2002 BBC Short Story Competition, the 2005 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize: Best First Book (overall), and the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award: Fiction category. She is also the first Nigerian writer to be nominated for a Grammy Awards for her contribution to American singer Beyonce’s Beyonce album.

In 2015, she was listed as one of the The 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine. Chimamanda’s writing style and public speeches at TED talks and different platforms are always well written. As a President, she will breeze through campaigns and win people over with her eloquent speeches. She is also very likable, has no great scandal attached to her and would fit in perfectly to the role of Nigeria’s first female President.
