Actresses who have been banned from Nollywood
JOKE SILVA
Even though her name wasn’t publicly announced as part of those banned, Nollywood icon Joke Silva said in an interview that she was also blacklisted.
MERCY JOHNSON
The most recent banned actress apart from Rahama, Mercy Johnson was banned by some marketers in 2014 because of the high fees she charged from filmmakers. She also did not take the ban sitting down. She shared her thoughts on Twitter writing that “Wats wrong when u keep quiet till u no wats up?no petition,no complain just fees those who can’t afford heineken should stick with Kai kai.”
GENEVIEVE NNAJI
In 2005, Actress Genevieve Nnaji was banned by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) alongside her male counterparts like Nkem Owoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ramsey Nouah and Pete Edochie. The main reason for the ban was the exorbitant fee Genevieve and her colleagues were reportedly asking for at the time. Did the ban work? I don’t think so because Genevieve is still acting in blockbuster movies, signing lucrative endorsement deals and getting recognition internationally.
OMOTOLA JALADE EKEINDE
Ekeinde was also banned by AGN in 2005 from the same reason mentioned above. This also did not make an impact on her career as she is still well regarded as a veteran in the industry and she was even named by TIME magazine Last three years ago in their 100 most influential people in the world list.
STELLA DAMASUS
This actress and singer was also banned in 2005. However, she has since bounced back.
RAHAMA SADAU
On Sunday, popular Kannywood actress was banned by the Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN) for featuring in a video by rapper, ClassiQ.
This move has caused uproar online as Nigerians have come out to support Rahama with many slamming MOPPAN for the ban. MOPPAN is a coalition of associations that set rules and regulations governing the conduct of actors and actresses, as well as production of movies in northern Nigeria.
Interestingly, RAHAMA SADAU was earlier suspended in May 2015 for six months by the same body because she accused popular actor and producer, Adam Zango of demanding sex from her for a role in his movie ‘Duniya Makaranta’.
Also, this is not the first time actors have been banned from Nollywood.
